The first ever webchat arranged by The Safer Leicester Partnership was held on Thursday July 29 between 6 – 7 pm

The Safer Leicester Partnership (SLP) is made up of a number of different agencies, such as Leicestershire Constabulary, Leicester City Council, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service Leicestershire and Rutland Probation Board and Leicester NHS and also includes partners from the private and the voluntary sector, such as the local Chamber of Commerce sector and victim and witness support services.

The web chat was hosted on the Leicestershire Constabulary website and members of the public were able to ask questions which were answered live by the City Commander Chief Superintendent Rob Nixon, Leicester City Council’s Strategic Director for Adults and Communities Kim Curry and the Director of Safer and Stronger Communities Ann Habens.

The theme of the web chat was ‘Community Safety and Neighbourhoods’ and there were some interesting subjects raised about such topics as how cultural events may promote a safer Leicester, the reintroduction of the 101 number scheme, police presence in neighboourhoods and how social media is being used by the Police.

Those asking questions included Eyres Monsell Ward Councillor Rory Palmer; Geoff Rowe, Director of Leicester Comedy Festival; Citizen Reporter Moggy, and Simon Parker of Leicester Libraries.

John Coster, Editor of Citizens’ Eye, asked about how his aim of getting 2,012 Community Reporters could help in promoting a safer Leicester. There was also a question asking about the use of the large TV screen on Humberstone Gate for more localised information and news.

The response from the panel members was positive, they thanked people for their questions and suggested meeting some of the people involved so that some of the suggestions could be considered further.

John Coster commented about the webchat, saying, “It’s a great opportunity to make the wider issues open to debate with the public especially those often excluded due to being unable to attend meetings because of disability or travel arrangements. Citizens Eye is all about giving people a voice so our volunteers are willing to help facilitate and promote any further webchats”

Simon Parker said ” During the course of the debate I congratulated the Safer Leicester Partnership in using social media in this way and was really pleased to find the Police so willing to embrace things like Facebook, Twitter and You Tube to deliver and receive information to make Leicester safer. I hope the webchat becomes a regular feature and I hope it can be longer next time”

Michael Lewis, who was following the debate said ” I think it’s a great idea, it’s the way forward but I wish more people had known about it”

A merger between two city centre libraries is one step closer after Leicester City Council submitted its planning application.

The £500,000 scheme involves incorporating the main Belvoir Street library into the smaller Bishop Street branch, next to Town Hall Square.
