The Reading Shop in Oadby will be giving young readers a good fun opportunity to enjoy the wonderful world of books, with some super summer and autumn events.

Children who need a little extra help with reading will get their chance to catch up too - thanks to some special classes with expert tuition.

The Reading Shop is run by staff who believe in making reading fun - opening the door to a lifetime of reading enjoyment.

Events include story telling sessions, competitions, author signings and book parties plus an unrivalled selection of wonderful books for children of all ages. The Reading Shop offers fun for all the family - along with a golden opportunity to catch up with every aspect of the wonderful world of reading.

The Reading Shop has organised a holiday play scheme. The price will cover the teachers’ fees and all materials. They are offering five sessions in the first place. Each will last from 9.30 to 12 noon.

They will run each session for 10 children only, at a cost of £12.50 per child. The sessions will be suitable for children aged 6 to 11, but are willing to stretch this a bit for particular children!

The sessions will be led by two members of our staff, both trained teachers, and will offer story telling, art and craft activities, and
drama around a particular theme.

Themes are as follows:

Monday 4 August: Dinosaurs

Tuesday 5 August: Volcanoes

Wednesday 6 August: Pirates

Thursday 7 August: Narnia

Friday 8 August: Dr Who

Early booking with a deposit of £5 is advised to secure a place.

Editor: So if your interested in helping a child into the magical world of reading…. through a dusty wardrobe, accompanying Captain Jack Sparrow and having adventures while passing terrifying T-Rex’s and floating across hot lava in the Tardis…..blimey……maybe this is for them!

Please get in touch with Lynn and her team for a great summer treat.

Read their blog about Robert Smythe students meeting Ten Five …..”We’d been pretending to be teachers, turning Robert Smythe School (Market Harborough) art department into our own little art school where cartoons were king.

So with a 22 strong teenage drawing-force we laid the doodle smackdown on some big MDF boards and made this tree”

Checkout the website and blog

If you have a group who need a couple of live wires to get their creative juices flowing and need a big boring wall covered in something resembling the ‘Sistine Chapel for the 21st century’, then these are the guys you have been searching for!

The term ‘citizenship’ has several different meanings:

A legal and political status

In its simplest meaning, ‘citizenship’ is used to refer to the status of being a citizen – that is, to being a member of a particular political community or state. Citizenship in this sense brings with it certain rights and responsibilities that are defined in law, such as the right to vote, the responsibility to pay tax and so on. It is sometimes referred to as nationality, and is what is meant when someone talks about ‘applying for’, ‘getting’, or being ‘refused’ citizenship.

Involvement in public life and affairs

The term ‘citizenship’ is also used to refer to involvement in public life and affairs – that is, to the behaviour and actions of a citizen. It is sometimes known as active citizenship. Citizenship in this sense is applied to a wide range of activities – from voting in elections and standing for political office to taking an interest in politics and current affairs. It refers not only to rights and responsibilities laid down in the law, but also to general forms of behaviour– social and moral – which societies expect of their citizens. What these rights, responsibilities and forms of behaviour should be is an area of on-going public debate, with people holding a range of views.

An educational activity

Finally, ‘citizenship’ is used to refer to an educational activity – that is, to the process of helping people learn how to become active, informed and responsible citizens. Citizenship in this sense is also known as citizenship education or education for citizenship. It encompasses all forms of education, from informal education in the home or through youth work to more formal types of education provided in schools, colleges, universities, training organisations and the workplace. At the formal end of the spectrum, it gives its name both to a distinct subject in the National Curriculum for11to 16 year olds and to a general area of study leading to an academic qualification – both of which, confusingly, are sometimes spelled with a small and sometimes a capital ‘c’.
