The latest Leicester City of Sanctuary News Update (No.6 July 2010) is now available. View the news update for Leicester through the link to the City of Sanctuary website at: http://www.cityofsanctuary.com/files/Issue_6_-_July_2010.doc

City of Sanctuary is a movement to build a culture of hospitality for people seeking sanctuary in the UK. Our goal is to create a network of towns and cities throughout the country which are proud to be places of safety, and which include people seeking sanctuary fully in the life of their communities.

A City of Sanctuary is a place of safety and welcome for people whose lives are in danger in their own countries.

It is a place where:

the skills and cultures of people seeking sanctuary are valued, where they are included in local communities and able to contribute to the life of the city.

community groups, local government, media, business, schools and colleges have a shared commitment to offering sanctuary, so that it is seen as part of the city’s identity by local people.

people seeking sanctuary can easily build relationships with local people as neighbours, friends and colleagues. Through these relationships, local people come to understand the injustices refugees face, and become motivated to support and defend them.

On Saturday 31st July Leicester Aids Support Services (LASS) are delighted to have the support of the Horse and Groom pub in Rearsby for a fundraising day and sponsored walks.

With the support of the community LASS aim to raise £3000 for their children’s fund, food bank and hardship fund. There will be a range of walks of different lengths and different terrains. The shortest is fine for wheelchairs and pushchairs, the longest is 20km. The walks will start at different times and aim to finish between 5 and 7 for a barbecue. The pub has made their skittle alley available for fund raising so there will also be a raffle, therapies, bric-a-brac and cake stalls as well as a bouncy castle for children. For more information about the walks and to register please contact Dipesh, George, Casey or Mohsin at LASS, or email on reception@lass.org.uk .

If people are not able to join a walk please sponsor someone from LASS – look on www.justgiving.com/lass , come also for the afternoon/evening or help by volunteering as a steward.

100% of the funds raised will go to the charitable funds. Even today the number of people living with HIV in Leicester and Leicestershire is rising. People are still living in extreme hardship because of the fear of HIV discrimination and stigma. Eating well and keeping healthy are two key ways someone with HIV can ensure their HIV diagnosis is not a life sentence, but becomes a long term condition.

The fund raising day is also about awareness raising and support. LASS hopes people will join them to support the organization and encourage people to pass this invitation on to friends, families and social networks.

The address of the Horse and Groom is: 1783, Melton Road, Rearsby, Leicestershire, LE7 4YR

Only In Leicester blog by Ben Ravilious:

“Vast amounts of media coverage are given over to the need to ‘integrate’ immigrants into the UK and the immigrants are usually blamed when this doesn’t happen properly.

But real integration isn’t to be found on the pages of the Home Office’s Life In the United Kingdom book (which is now required reading for all would-be non-EU immigrants) any more than reading the Highway Code teaches us to actually drive a car.

Talk to anyone who has actually arrived in the UK from another country (whether as on a temporary basis or as a permanent settler) and the story is one of confronting a wall of British reserve and sketchy information. A common result of this is that immigrants collect in cliques of their fellow countrymen, cliques which can often become quite insular and entrenched and which do not help them fit in (let alone improve their English)” ……………… further reading below:

As a part of this year’s Refugee Week events, Leicester Civil Rights Movement have arranged for Banner Theatre’s latest show to be staged at Highfields Centre on Saturday 19th June at 2pm.

Banner Theatre’s new multimedia show looks at the world of work and migration in the context of the global downturn. Using in-depth interviews, digital media and original new music and song, ‘We Share The Same Sky’ weaves together the stories of three visitors to Britain.

From Afghanistan, Ali has fled the Taliban, who murdered his brother, and come to Britain in search of safety.

From Poland, where unemployment has been spiralling, atalia has come to England in search of work.

From Venezuela, Edenis visits England and compares life in Britain with the popular revolutionary changes taking place in his home country.

We Share The Same Sky weaves these stories into a rich tableau to ask what control we have over our working lives n the criss-cross ridden 21st century global economy. Are we makers of our destinies or the tools of powerful multinational corporations? And does the economic downturn herald a period of struggle, resistance and change?

Tickets are priced at £5 waged/ FREE for the unwaged

For further details contact: 0116 253 1053 or Leicester Civil Rights Movement c/o Highfields Centre, 96 Melbourne Road, Leicester, LE2 0DS
