PC Charles Edwards made a brief presentation to the Castle Ward Community Meeting held in March outlining recent changes to Police Boundaries and current Police Priorities in the ward.

Concerning Police boundaries PC Edwards said that Police staffing arrangements would be set up to be aligned with the Castle Ward boundary and that this would enable a better connection with other agencies such as Leicester City Council.

The number of beat officers on shift at any time in the ward would be 16 supported by 22 (soon to be 23) Police Community Support Officers. There is to be even more of a Police presence in the ward on Friday and Saturday evenings.

PC Edwards then outlined the current Police priorities for the Castle Ward these included:

Reducing street drinking and antisocial behaviour in the London Road/ Conduit Street area, Working with partner agencies to reduce cycle theft from the universities, working with partner agencies to reduce littering and other waste issues around the universities.

PC Edwards then reported that there had been recent successes with arrests of burglars in the Riverside area and arrests for cylcle theft, which had reduced as a result.

PC Edwards went on to say that residents views on priorities for policing in the ward were actively sought and that there were monthly meetings which people could attend to give their views on priorities as well as having the opportunity to do so at Community Meetings.

On Friday 15th July 2010 the Department for Culture, Media and Sport published its Structural Reform Plan.

The priorities are:

2012 Olympic Games, Boosting the Big Society, Media Reform, Universal Broadband and Encouraging competitive sport in schools.

Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for DCMS, said

“The biggest challenge DCMS faces is delivering a safe and successful Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012 – the largest peacetime logistical operation this country has ever faced. I’m determined to make the most of it, and ensure that London 2012 will be a symbol of our economic recovery, our social and cultural renewal and our re- emergence on the global stage.”"I want to use 2012 to encourage more young people into sport by establishing an Olympic and Paralympic-style competition, open to every school in the country. We will deliver a powerful legacy for elite sport and create a real and lasting legacy for the tourism industry.”

“ I want my Department to help make the Big Society a reality. We will create a culture of giving, so that more of us have a greater connection with the things we care about. We will return the National Lottery to its original good causes of art, sport, heritage and the voluntary sector, and take away the barriers that prevent investment in local media. I want our major cultural institutions to be freed from government control so they can raise more money and spend it as they see fit.”

“I want Britain to have the best superfast broadband network in Europe, and I will do everything I can to incentivise business to invest in this, so we can get there by 2015 – opening up the infrastructure and levelling the playing field for new investment. We will roll back media regulation where it’s preventing growth.”

People in Leicester ,with an interest in, or working in culture, media and sport may look at the report in more detail to see how local services and provision may be influenced through the following link: http://www.culture.gov.uk/images/publications/SRP_DCMS_150710.pdf
