On August 1st (Emancipation Day) last year to commemorate the Abolition of Slave Trade Bi-Centenary celebrations we carried a young black oak tree from Rothley Court Hotel to Nelson Mandela Park on our first Emancipation Walk. At the end of the walk we planted the tree in Mandela Park and named it the ‘Freedom Tree’. Last year’s theme was ‘Setting New Roots’.

Today, Black Future Group members will be taking the challenge and walking the ‘Walk of Honour’ for the second year running. This year’s theme is ‘Raising the Standard’, and Black Future will start to roll out The Emancipation Project by raising a flag displaying our new Emancipation logo.

Emancipation Walk ‘08 Schedule

We will be carrying the flag for the duration of the walk to encourage walkers and to raise public awareness of the project. The main objective of today’s Emancipation Walk is to layout a wheelchair friendly route and to identify suitable places to plant memorial trees along the way. This will mark the official route.

Black Future will also be continuing our Emancipation Day public holiday petition which will be officially petitioned directly to 10 Downing Street as of September 1st 2008. Please print off the Petition below and get your friends and colleagues to join you in signing this important document.

Emancipation Day is widely observed throughout the world during the first week of August. The Slavery Abolition Act 1833 ended slavery in the British Empire on August 1, 1834. In many countries, the Emancipation Day celebration is a part of carnivals which take place during this time.

On 1st August 2007, the Black Future Group organised an Emancipation Walk from Rothley Court to Nelson Mandela Park, in the heart of Leicester. A great many people completed the seven mile journey, which ended with the planting of the Black Future Tree next to the plaque honouring Nelson Mandela.

On 1st August this year the walk will once again take place and everyone is invited to join the Black Future Group in this celebration of Emancipation for all.
