Citizens’ Eye partner ipadio has won an award for its use in innovative language learning methods. The ipadio site says:

“Just as the week was beginning to wind down last Friday afternoon, we received some brilliant news – ipadio has won another award! Colin Buchanan from Scotland’s Colleges and Justin Sales from Stephenson College had jointly presented ipadio as a tool for language learning at the e-Assessment Scotland and picked up the award for Mobile E-Assessment!

Colin and Justin demonstrated ipadio using audience participation and tongue twisters – the perfect way to illustrate how ipadio can be used in the classroom environment.

Justin reckons that ease of use is one of the main contributing factors as to why ipadio managed to triumph – which sounds about right, when you consider everyone in the room had a device from which to phonecast sitting in their pocket.

We’re obviously pleased for them – they’ve been doing some great stuff with education on ipadio for months now.”

Citizens’ Eye recognise the great potential for delivering community information to those communities with developing English language skills and those who want to communicate information in languages other than English.

The citizen reporters here at Citizens’ Eye send congratulations to the ipadio team.

See more about ipadio and listen and learn how to phlog see:http://blog.ipadio.com/09/ipadio-wins-mobile-e-assessment-award/

LeicesterCare services are available to anyone living in Leicester, regardless of their age, whether they rent or own their own property and whether they live alone, with a partner or with a family.

The emergency alarm system is based on a very reliable modern communications system. The lifeline unit is connected to an active telephone line and a 13 amp electrical socket. The alarm can be activated without dialling, simply by pressing the red button on the main unit or on the personal pendant, which can be worn around the neck so that it can be used anywhere in the home.

The alarm call goes through to the control room and the computer enables staff to identify the caller and where they live. If help is required service users are able to tell staff what the problem is, and in an emergency staff can contact relatives, neighbours or the emergency services, as applicable.

If users are too far away from the phone to be heard when they press the alarm, staff will contact a designated key holder (usually a neighbour, friend or family member who lives nearby) and request that they visit urgently.

For more information about getting the LeicesterCare alarm system see:http://www.leicester.gov.uk/your-council-services/housing/living-in-leicester-and-home-advice/leicestercare/

Homelessness in Leicestershire is very likely to rise according to Chris Toon, Leicestershire Cares Homelessness Project Co-ordinator and Councillor Paul Westley, Leicester City Council Cabinet Member for Housing.

Speaking at the Leicestershire Cares Homelessness Project Open day held at Braunstone Leisure Centre, Mr Toon, when asked the problem of homelessness in Leicester and the future of the project, said “I can only see it getting bigger and unfortunately there will be a need for a project like this, as economically that’s the way we’re going. I can only see more homelessness and what we’re trying to do is to break the cycle of no home, no job-no job, no home”

Cllr Westley said at the event which brought together 31 voluntary and statutory agencies together with homeless people, “ Homelessness effects people every 24 hours in a day.It doesn’t matter what background or age.”

Responding to a question about the continuation of services for homeless people Cllr Westley, Labour Councillor for Beaumont Leys Ward said, “Homelessness I feel will get a lot worse. With the uncertainty of what the coalition government is planning we won’t know until the end of the year”

He went on to say “ I think this is one of the major issues that any government, whichever political party is in, have failed in the past. And that goes for all parties, including my own. We could’ve done more with more social housing.”

“ More than ever before there is a housing crisis. There are 8,000 on the waiting list. I’ve said, that as a politician, that we need to do more. We should have acted 15 years ago.”

Mr Toon and Cllr Westley saw hope in the response in the number of organisations who wanted to attend the event, which included Action Homeless and other groups working with homeless people, along with services dealing with health, domestic violence, welfare advice, revenue and benefits advice, housing and hostels, education and training, children and families.

Both Mr Toon and Cllr Westley praised First Bus for providing free travel for service users and the Samworth brothers,Walkers and Leicester market traders for providing the food for the event.

Councillor Westley, said ” I want Leicester to be a caring city. All these agencies are here today to prove to me that Leicester does care.”

Chris Toon said that the event had been a success with approximately 250 people attending, ” My whole idea was what would you do if you were homeless, who would you talk to. I went about getting the agencies from across the city and county together and service users talking to them. I’ve had people come up to me and saying ‘I didn’t know this existed, I didn’t know that existed. I’ve got so much help from this or that”

This was endorsed by service users that Citizens’ Eye spoke to. One, who was made homeless by relocating to Leicester due to domestic violence, said “I’ve had so much help from people in Leicester since I’ve got here. They’ve made my self esteem and confidence so much better. I feel like I can move forward now and start my life again.”
