The Coleman Community Meeting was assured by Adrian Russell, Director of Environmental Services for Leicester City Council, that demolition of the former Provincial Garage on Uppingham Road, which was gutted by fire in 2007, would take place before the end of October.

Residents were concerned about the length of time it had taken for visible action to take place. Mr Russell assured the meeting that a lot of work had been undertaken by Leicester City Council which was not their legal responsibility.

Mr Russell outlined the fact that on numerous occasions the council has had to step in to make the building safe and that action had been taken against the owners but that their appeal against it had slowed the process down.

The owners of the property have now dropped their appeal and the City Council will proceed with demolition work. Leicester City Council will recover the cost of demolition from the owners.

Speaking at the Coleman Ward Community Meeting, Barbara Whitcombe, Team Manager of the City Wardens for Leicester City Council, said that illegal ‘pop up’ mobile street car salesrooms are becoming more of a problem across the city and particularly in the Coleman and Thurncourt wards. Ms Whitcombe said that they were springing up as people offload second or third cars in the time of recession.

Local residents in the area had noticed that deliveries of second hand cars were being delivered by car transporters at times when streets were clear of resident’s vehicles. ‘For sale’ signs appeared on the cars with often the same contact number. Residents commented that something should be done to stop the activity as it was affecting their ability to park near their residences and people accessing businesses in the area.

Ms Whitcombe stressed that responsibility for dealing with this kind of trading was the responsibility of the City Wardens and not the police. She said that they had dealt with numerous cases already and were pursuing others.

The City Wardens are able to use several laws to tackle the problem, although Ms Whitcombe said, that access to legal information on the internet meant that people were able to ‘Google’ loopholes to help them evade prosecution. She said the temporary nature of the activities also made it difficult to eradicate the problem. One street being cleared meant that the vendors moved to another in the area or to a different ward in the city and a new investigation had to begin.

Residents were pleased to hear that the City Wardens were aware of the issue and were taking action against the people involved, where possible.

Concerning the recent activity in the Coleman ward, one resident said he had recorded both the contact number for the sales and the registration number of the car transporter making the deliveries. Ms Whitcombe praised such vigilance and encouraged other people noticing such trading to contact the City Warden in their ward or via Leicester City Council.

Citizens’ Eye partner ipadio has won an award for its use in innovative language learning methods. The ipadio site says:

“Just as the week was beginning to wind down last Friday afternoon, we received some brilliant news – ipadio has won another award! Colin Buchanan from Scotland’s Colleges and Justin Sales from Stephenson College had jointly presented ipadio as a tool for language learning at the e-Assessment Scotland and picked up the award for Mobile E-Assessment!

Colin and Justin demonstrated ipadio using audience participation and tongue twisters – the perfect way to illustrate how ipadio can be used in the classroom environment.

Justin reckons that ease of use is one of the main contributing factors as to why ipadio managed to triumph – which sounds about right, when you consider everyone in the room had a device from which to phonecast sitting in their pocket.

We’re obviously pleased for them – they’ve been doing some great stuff with education on ipadio for months now.”

Citizens’ Eye recognise the great potential for delivering community information to those communities with developing English language skills and those who want to communicate information in languages other than English.

The citizen reporters here at Citizens’ Eye send congratulations to the ipadio team.

See more about ipadio and listen and learn how to phlog see:http://blog.ipadio.com/09/ipadio-wins-mobile-e-assessment-award/

LeicesterCare services are available to anyone living in Leicester, regardless of their age, whether they rent or own their own property and whether they live alone, with a partner or with a family.

The emergency alarm system is based on a very reliable modern communications system. The lifeline unit is connected to an active telephone line and a 13 amp electrical socket. The alarm can be activated without dialling, simply by pressing the red button on the main unit or on the personal pendant, which can be worn around the neck so that it can be used anywhere in the home.

The alarm call goes through to the control room and the computer enables staff to identify the caller and where they live. If help is required service users are able to tell staff what the problem is, and in an emergency staff can contact relatives, neighbours or the emergency services, as applicable.

If users are too far away from the phone to be heard when they press the alarm, staff will contact a designated key holder (usually a neighbour, friend or family member who lives nearby) and request that they visit urgently.

For more information about getting the LeicesterCare alarm system see:http://www.leicester.gov.uk/your-council-services/housing/living-in-leicester-and-home-advice/leicestercare/
