Leicester City Council Awards Fit 4 Business Grant to Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce
Will enable roll-out of Smarter Travel Leicester’s programme to encourage reduction of single occupancy of cars and development of sustainable travel business networks
Leicester City Council has awarded its latest Leicester Fit for Business grant to Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce. The £5,000 grant is part funded from the Department for Transport Sustainable Transport Fund and will enable the Chamber to help its member employers make low cost, low carbon commuting easier for staff.
The Fit 4 Business grants assist businesses to implement measures that help achieve sustainable travel choices, including walking, cycling, car sharing and public transport. As part of the Fit 4 Business activity, Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce has engaged Go Travel Solutions to deliver the Smarter Travel Leicester project. This will help to reduce single occupancy of cars in Leicester and encourage businesses and their staff to travel more sustainably through the use of a sustainable travel business network with a package of supporting measures including travel discounts.
Martin Traynor, Managing Director of Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce said: “Single occupancy of cars in Leicester can be reduced and there are certainly opportunities for modal shift to more sustainable means for both commuting and business travel. With the benefit of this investment from a Fit 4 Business grant, we can use the Smarter Travel Leicester programme through our Chamber and Business Builder networks, and other promotional channels to maximise awareness.”
Robin Pointon, Managing Director of Go Travel Solutions said: “Our Smarter Travel Leicester programme is a proven model with over 40 local businesses in Leicester and Leicestershire already enjoying the benefits that it can bring to support the adoption of sustainable travel practices. We look forward to working with Leicestershire
Chamber of Commerce to implement Smarter Travel Leicester and help Chamber members and their staff to travel more sustainably.”
Leicester’s Fit 4 Business initiative was awarded £4.4 million from the Department for Transport’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund in 2011. It is one of the biggest employer engagement programmes ever to be undertaken in the UK for sustainable travel. For more information please visit www.business-travel-package.com
