The Attenborough Prize 2013 shortlist has been announced today by New Walk Museum & Art Gallery, Leicester.

The artist’s prize, The Attenborough Prize, started in 2007, and is now in its sixth year and

features a shortlist of nine artists vying for the £2000 prize. The 2013 shortlisted artists and artworks are;

Amy Bonsor, Tonal turbines, Victoria Brookland, Into an ardent blazing, Roger and Daniéle Bradley, Growing old playfully in Norfolk, Bryan Hible, Happy hoodie spots a ship, Elisa Panerai, George, Mark Russell, Spotlite, journey from Calvary, Lucy Stevens, Pigeon feather pie chart, Michael Westmoreland, Belgrave Road and Paul Young, Judah.

Exhibition officer, Hugo Worthy said:

“This years’ Open 24 has proved to be so full of talent that our three judges selected a total of 9 works to form the Attenborough shortlist, up from the usual six. It really shows the wealth of talent in the region across different media including extraordinary photography, fine drawing, exquisitely crafted ceramics and wonderful painting.”

The Attenborough Prize shortlist is selected from entered works into the Open 24 exhibition at New Walk Museum & Art Gallery and awarded to the best contemporary visual artist in the exhibition. The Attenborough Prize aims to support a regional based artist and their professional development. The prize-winner will be announced at the private view and launch of the exhibition on Friday 1st February 2013.

The previous Attenborough Prize winners were Edward Sellman (2011), David Raine (2010), Neil Raitt (2009), Sarah Key (2008) and Choterina Freer (2007).

The annual Open exhibition is a great barometer of creative talent in the region with a wide

selection of different artforms, from landscape painting to photography, illustration and

sculpture, textiles and ceramics. All the artworks are for sale, providing a perfect opportunity

for visitors to start their very own art collection.

The Open exhibition is available to artists living or working in Leicestershire, Rutland,

Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire with craft practitioners also

from Warwickshire and the West Midlands.

The Attenborough Prize shortlist will be exhibited as part of the Open 24 exhibition at New

Walk Museum & Art Gallery. The exhibition runs from 2nd February – 7th April 2013, admission is free.
