Barnardo’s Youth Contract are now accepting referrals from the Leicestershire region.
The Youth Contract is a government initiative designed to provide additional support to help young unemployed people (re)engage in education, training or employment. One element of the initiative is the £126 million support fund for 16-17 year-old NEET young people who do not have a GCSE at grade C or above.
In Leicestershire Barnardo’s is one of the organisations that will be delivering this element of the Youth Contract. Our model centres on providing ‘youth mentors’ who will work alongside local authorities and other agencies helping young people access relevant activities and support, ensuring they re-engage in education, training or work and supporting them once they’re re-engaged to sustain successful outcomes. Support will be offered in three broad stages as set out below. ·
Identification – Young people who meet the age and qualification criteria will be supported to enrol in the Youth Contract
Re-engaging – Youth mentors will focus on the young person’s strengths and ambitions and explore the reasons behind their disengagement, the advice and guidance they’ve received previously and their contact with other agencies. Youth mentors support the young person to engage with education, employment or training appropriate for them
Sustaining – Youth mentors will agree and implement with the young person (and their employer or training provider if appropriate) an action plan to manage the risk of potential disengagement.
