Action Homeless launched their Winter Appeal back in November with the aim of raising £10,000 to help rough sleepers. They are now over half way to reaching this target but still need help to ensure provision of extra emergency beds for people who find themselves on the streets of Leicester throughout 2013. Thanks to a donation of £2500 from Caterpillar UK, the appeal got off to a great start before Christmas. Donations from local schools, churches and individuals have seen the total continue to rise. It now stands at over £6000.
Now that the festivities are over, Action Homeless are urging people not to forget about homeless people in Leicester. With freezing temperatures forecast for the coming weeks, the emergency beds at Mayfield House will become a lifeline for people who find themselves on the streets with nowhere to go. Poverty and Homelessness Action Week (26th January – 3rd February) is just around the corner and Action Homeless are asking people to spare a thought for those who don’t have a home to go to.
Rob Parkinson, Action Homeless Chief Executive, said ‘We are really grateful to everyone who has supported our Winter Appeal so far. After Christmas is over, it can be easy for us all to forget about the most vulnerable people in our local community. As temperatures start to drop, sleeping on the streets becomes ever more dangerous and we need to ensure that people who find themselves in this position have somewhere they can go. If you’ve not made any new year’s resolutions, why not think about supporting Action Homeless to help people affected by homelessness in Leicester.’
£10,000 will allow Action Homeless to continue providing extra emergency beds at Mayfield House throughout 2013. Since opening in November 2011, these emergency beds have been used by lots of people who would otherwise be facing a night on the streets. If you’d like to make a donation, visit www.actionhomeless.org.uk or you can send a cheque to Action Homeless, Ridgeway House, Little Hill, Newton Lane, Wigston, LE18 3SE.
Action Homeless will be rounding off their Winter Appeal with Not the Big Snooze, a sponsored sleep out, to be held on Friday 22nd March 2013. The sleep out will be held in a secure courtyard at LCB Depot in Leicester’s Cultural Quarter. To sign up for the sleep out, which is open to anyone over the age of 18, visit www.actionhomeless.org.uk or email eilidhkennedy@actionhomeless.org.uk
