In this extraordinary year of sport, The Community Games programme has provided a great opportunity for communities and families to come together to take part in sporting and cultural activities inspired by, and in celebration of, the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Over 1,000 Community Games have taken place across the country since April 2012.  Across Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland, over 50 events have registered as a Community Games. Through the creation of the Leicester-Shire and Rutland Community Games Cash Fund local communities have been supported to host their own sporting and cultural celebration inspired by the Olympic and Paralympic Games. 27 communities across Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland were successful in obtaining funding to support the delivery of their event.  These events ranged from Queen’s Diamond Jubilee parties, school summer games to ‘It’s a Knockout’ competitions and Olympic Torch Relay celebrations, and have seen over 20,000 people taking part. In addition, Leicester-Shire and Rutland Sport has also assisted a further 24 events with event advice, resources and volunteer recruitment.  The Games has been a great success, helping to bring the community together and providing improved equipment. In light of the dreadful weather throughout the summer, it’s a fantastic achievement that so many of the organising groups have still managed to run their events. The final summer Community Games event in Leicestershire took place last weekend at the Donisthorpe Village Gala where people could take part in football competitions, races, karate, music, a parade and fancy dress. If you are interested in organising your own Community Games event next year, please see www.communitygames.org.uk
