A pledge to deal with winter damage to Leicester’s roads has reached a milestone with the completion of repairs to the 4,000th pothole.
Work has been taking place since May 2011, when incoming city mayor Peter Soulsby announced a pledge to fill 1,000 potholes within his first 100 days in office.
The work has continued since then, with 4,000 potholes now filled and repaired. Leicester City Council’s team of seven highway management officers have been involved in identifying potholes needing work, from a combination of routine safety inspections and reports from residents.
The figure of 4,000 does not include potholes dealt with by the numerous planned maintenance schemes which have already been carried out. Further planned schemes are continuing to remove even more potholes from the highway network.
Leicester deputy city mayor responsible for transport, Cllr Rory Palmer, said: “The last two very severe winters caused a lot of damage to the city’s roads, which is why we made pothole repairs one of our top priorities.
“The fact that 4,000 of them have now been repaired is a credit to the hard work of our City Highways staff in handling this huge workload.
“We are proposing to increase our highways maintenance budget next financial year to ensure that this important work can continue.”
