Braunstone parkrun round-up (week 69), 18 February 2012

The latest parkrun took place at Braunstone Park at the weekend (18
February), attracting 143 runners to the weekly, timed, 5k race.

The field included around 50 red-clad runners who were showing their
support for a series of led runs, walks and bike rides organised by
Leicester City Council and taking place a week later (25 February) for
the British Heart Foundation ‘Wear it Red’ Day.

Amongst the runners were a number of newcomers and it was four of
these that made their marks in both the men’s and women’s races as
well as for the juniors.

Will Cockerell made an immediate impact in his Braunstone parkrun
debut, running home in 16:49 to seal the win. The Belgrave Harrier, an
experienced parkrunner at other courses with 38 previous appearances
under his belt, has already won Braunstone’s sister races at Bushy,
Wimbledon Common and Richmond.

Last week’s Coventry parkrun runner-up, Jason Brotherhood, recorded an
identical placing this week on his home turf in a personal best time
of 17:08. The Hinckley RC athlete took 4 seconds off the time from his
last Braunstone appearance to take second place. This was his 4th
successive PB over the course and marked his fifth top three finish.

Braunstone parkrun veteran, Gary Hawksley, ran home in third place in
a time of 17:30. The West End Runner, a winner last October, recorded
his 14th top three finish from 34 appearances.

Louise Gibson of Hinckley RC did in the ladies’ race what Cockerell
did in the men’s. The first-timer sealed her victory with a 18:22
finish, almost a minute ahead of fellow debutant, Kate Ramsey. The
Charnwood AC runner crossed the line in 19:14 to secure second place.

Wigston Phoenix’s Maxine Powell took third place with a 21:55 finish.
Powell, making her 6th appearance, is returning to the form she showed
last May when she finished third with a PB time of 21:32.

Debutant Joel Plant was the first home for the under 15s. The
youngster crossed the line in 23:20. Meanwhile Denis Thompson of West
End Runners was the latest Braunstone parkrunner to join the exclusive
50 Club, a national group of runners that have completed 50 or more
parkruns. Thompson marked his landmark run with a 21:10 finish.

The Braunstone parkrun men’s course record, set in week 58 by
Blackheath & Bromley Harriers athlete James Poole, still stands at
15:08. The ladies’ course best of 16:15 set in week 19 by GB Olympian,
Lisa Dobriskey, also remains unbeaten.

The 69th race of the series takes place next Saturday (25 February),
starting at 9am in front of the old stable block at Braunstone Park.
The race is free to enter but first-time runners must register
beforehand online at www.parkrun.org.uk/braunstone.
