More residents are being urged to come forward and join a network of volunteers helping vulnerable people to stay safe during wintry conditions.
Leicestershire County Council and its partners are holding a series of events across the county where potential volunteers can find out more.
Volunteers could become Energy Champions – providing advice to vulnerable people on how they can make their homes warmer and more energy efficient.
They could also become a Good Neighbour. This includes checking on vulnerable people who live next door, or nearby, helping with essential tasks such as getting shopping, a hot meal or clearing their path if there is snow.
Vulnerable people can be older people, young children, people with disabilities or other adults.
Volunteers are needed for the remainder of this winter and will be required for next winter too.
They are being recruited at part of the ‘4 Ways 2 Warmth’ project which is led by the County Council and includes partners such as the NHS, public health, district and other councils, volunteer agencies and other organisations.
The project was awarded £120,000 of Government funding to give practical help and promote initiatives which will help keep vulnerable people warm and safe, preventing them from going into hospital.
Once volunteers are recruited they will then receive training so they can begin to help people in their communities.
David Sprason, Leicestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Adults and Communities, said: “It’s vital that we do all we can to keep vulnerable people stay safe during the winter period.
“Volunteers can play their part in this by providing advice so that vulnerable people’s homes are warm enough and more energy efficient or by helping out with essential tasks such as getting their shopping or providing a hot meal.”
The awareness raising events will provide information on the 4 Ways 2 Warmth project and on volunteering.
