London 2012 – Leaving a Lasting Legacy for Leicester

Over the past two years, Inspire LeicesterShire & the Regional Co-ordinator for Children & Young People have been working with partners to maximise opportunities for the area associated with London hosting the 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games.

Fundamental to the Singapore bid, was the promise that the Games of the 30th Olympiad will leave a lasting legacy both for sport and particularly for our young people here in the UK. But is this really going to happen?

Here in Leicester & Leicestershire we believe it will.

The Chairman’s reception provides an opportunity for guests to find out how we have been ensuring that the Games are not just about London, and that its impact is creating a legacy right here in our local area.

Guests will hear about the hugely successful Get Set programme of educational activity in schools & colleges, helping to shape a legacy for our children & young people.

There will be an overview of the flagship local ‘My Games My Legacy’ programme, plus a summary of key achievements for Inspire LeicesterShire. There will be a Q&A session with some of our local sporting talent. There will also be an opportunity to see how the Paralympics will raise the profile of disability sports.

The event will include a ‘market place’ where guests will see first-hand some of the ways in which people can engage with the Games on a local and national level and hear about some of the amazing local projects that have been inspired by the Games – these include Go Gold, Patchwork Pledge, Club Activ8 & Loughborough Flames.

The Chairman of the County Council, Jackie Dickinson commented “I am delighted to be hosting this reception and presentation, which will help to showcase the positive impact of the Olympics in our local area. It promises to be both an informative and enjoyable evening and I am pleased to lend my support to the excellent work being undertaken in Leicestershire to ensure our young people benefit from the lasting legacy of the Games.”

Shimul Haider, 2012 Games Legacy Director for Leicester & Leicestershire commented:  “Tonight will be about celebrating our successes to date in terms of building the foundations of a strong legacy for the local area. It will also give people the opportunity to find out how they too can create their own legacy from Games”.

Gaynor Nash, Regional 2012 Co-ordinator for Children & Young People, added: “As a City & County, we have outperformed the rest of the region in terms of schools and colleges actively committed to the official London 2012 education programme, ‘Get Set’, which provides a wealth of opportunities for children and young people to take part in cross-curricular activities that link to the Olympic & Paralympic values”.
