From Leicester City Council:
City Centre Demonstrations On Saturday 4th February 2012
The English Defence League (EDL) is planning to hold a demonstration in Leicester city centre on Saturday February 4, 2012. Leicester Unite Against Fascism (UAF) has also said that they are planning a counter-demonstration.
We are working closely with Leicestershire Police on plans to ensure these demonstrations pass off peacefully and with the minimum disruption to the life of the city.
The current position: Discussions are currently underway with both the EDL and the UAF on arrangements for these demonstrations. Both organisations have said they wish to march in the city.
Only the Home Secretary has powers to ban marches like this and even with a ban in place, the groups may choose to hold static demonstrations instead. This is what happened in October 2010.
No decisions have yet been reached on the nature of these demonstrations and therefore the impact they may have on the city centre on February 4th.
When the situation is clear, we will be posting information and advice on this page to help you understand what impact we expect the demonstrations will have on the city centre – for example on bus services and potential road closures.
In the meantime, please be reassured that we are doing everything we possibly can to ensure that these demonstrations are peaceful and do not disrupt our city.
