People are being urged to make their views known on school admission arrangements and catchment areas.

Leicester City Council is carrying out its annual consultation on school admissions, and this year is also consulting on proposals to simplify school catchment area arrangements.

Both consultations began in December and are due to end on February 10, so people wanting to take part still have nearly three weeks to do so.

Every year the council runs a consultation on school admissions, to give people the chance to have their say on whether they feel schools are meeting the right admissions requirements as under the Schools Admissions Code.

This year people can also comment on a review of school catchment areas, which proposes a single primary and secondary catchment school for each address in the city.

Catchment areas have remained the same since 1997, despite the closure since then of five secondary schools. The proposals make the links between primary and secondary schools much clearer, so that parents have a better understanding of the paths open to them.

The city council and schools will make a decision on admissions arrangements for 2013 by April 15, 2012.

People wanting to take part in the admission arrangements consultation can view paper copies of the arrangements for the academic year 2013/2014 at any of the council’s Customer Service Centres, or online at www.leicester.gov.uk/admissionsconsultation

Packs are also available from the School Admissions Service on 0116 252 7009 or by emailing admissions.online@leicester.gov.uk

Catchment area consultation documents and questionnaires can be viewed online at www.leicester.gov.uk/catchmentreview, and are also available from schools, children’s centres and libraries.

Leicester assistant city mayor responsible for children, young people and schools, Cllr Vi Dempster, said: “Every year we make sure parents have their say on admissions arrangements, and this year we are also focusing on catchment areas to ensure it is as straightforward as possible for all pupils to get fair access to schools in their catchment areas.”
