Young People Takeover Leicester

Young People Takeover Leicester thumbnail

The day is a national event led by the Children’s Commissioner for England. It gives children and young people the opportunity to be involved in local and national decision-making by working alongside adults at all levels and across sectors.

They get the chance to understand how and why decisions are made and can influence future actions. Children’s Commissioner’s Takeover Day promotes the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), in particular Article 12, which says that children should have a say in matters affecting them, and their views must be taken seriously.

Manisha Binning (13) says – “I wanted to take part in takeover day because at first I didn’t have much confidence and I always wondered what it would be like to have a job. Also I wanted to take part because I felt that it would help me with my decisions as I grow older because I’m quite confused what I would like to study in years 10and 11 and also when I go to college. Furthermore just taking part in takeover day would open many doors for me because when I apply for college or university they will know that I have taken part in something interesting and educational. I feel takeover day will give me the skills and confidence I need t go through the challenges in life.”

Interview by Manisha Binning

Interview to young person (Zara Akram, aged 14)

How has the experience been for you so far and what sort of things have you done?
The experience has been great and really fun. Me and two other boys have been doing journalism and we have been making a website. I have really enjoyed taking part and also missing a day of school (but this is still educational)

Would you like to do this again next year, why?
Yes, definitely it’s been a great experience so far and every bodies been really nice and helpful. Also it would help me get into the colleges I what to get in, and give me more experience of working because I have chosen ICT and business so I would like to learn more about the jobs to do with what I have chosen.

What would you like to achieve from takeover day?
I would definitely like to achieve more confidence and more skills  in leadership. Also the experience of actually having a job and how a job works. I would want to achieve more independence too.

Interview to young person (Axshita  Parin, aged 13)

What would you like to achieve from takeover day?
I would like to achieve what most people want to achieve which are confidence  doing different things and also people skills and leadership skills because as I want to become a doctor I need all of these skills especially people skills as I need to communicate with patients. This would also help me get into the college I want to get in which QE because the colleges will be looking for different things you have done and achieved apart from going to school so this would help.

Interview to adult (youth worker)

Why do you think takeover day is a good idea? And what do you hope for your young person to achieve?
I definitely think takeover day is a good idea actually its a excellent idea because it gives young people the opportunity to see different professionals and to experience what they do. Also it gives them a variety of job opportunities  and it allows them to choose what they would like to be when they are older or at that stage when they are ready to take on a job. It also gives them the opportunity to talk to the different professionals and ask any questions about what they do etc. I would like my young person achieve many skills and the experience of having a job because when I was younger we didn’t have much opportunities like takeover day so that is why it is such a great idea.

By Faisal Omar (16) says “I wanted to take part in takeover day 2011 because i have taken part in takeover day since 2009 and the experience of the world of work has been amazing! This year I finely got the chance to work a day in the world of media. Something I have been interested in for some time. It’s an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. I have always wanted to pursue a career in media but never knew which direction to go. Takeover day has given me the opportunity to learn more about media and get some first hand experience and I’m not the only one. Takeover day has also given the opportunity to another 100 participants this year. which means I got a great chance to meet some other young people that I wouldn’t of had the chance to meet.”

Faisal Interviewed three people here is what they said:

Takeover day is supposed to be a national project, but a lot of cities do not do it. Do you think it should be compulsory for them to give young people this opportunity?

Barneby- “ Yes It should spread out and develop”

Fatima Khatun 13- “Yes because it would not be fair for other young people, they wouldn’t get the same chance that I’ve got. from takeover I’ve learnt so much and it would be shame if other children didn’t get the chance. I’ve learnt that youth workers actually do a lot they aren’t just there, we can use them for our benefits.

Where do you see Takeover day in the future?

Gerry Burke Area Youth Work Manger for the east – I think Takeover day is already on a good path, I hope it builds and broadens from where it is, and expands with more jobs not just in the youth service but other places as well, it could even become a part of the curriculum.
