We shall be reviewing the iPhone & iPad app during the meeting. If you are interested in being a Walking Guide please click here for more information.
12.00pm-1.00pm Citizens’ Eye Radio – If you are interested in volunteering for local community radio please come down to the Phoenix and find out about the many opportunities available across the city and county. These inlude Hilltop Radio -
Hilltop Radio is a Community focussed internet only ‘radio’ station serving the Borough of Hinckley and Bosworth. The station was established in 2009, with a view to providing mainly speech based community news and features, with a strong community bias.
Hilltop Radio is now looking to create a programme for the recruitment and development of volunteer community reporters, working in conjunction with a range of local partners, in order to provide high quality content for, amongst others, transmission on Hilltop Radio.
2.00pm-3.00pm HowRU? the mental health news agency is holding an open meeting for anyone interested in joining a new group of advocates to act as media spokespersons in Leicester and Leicestershire. The new group is being formed by the HowRU? editor Julian Harrison and John Coster, editor of Citizens Eye.
2.00pm-3.00pm The 2 yp news agency – a workshop covering ‘how to’ set up a school newspaper club. Organised by members of The Ace Project at VAL in partnership with The 2 young reporters.
2.00pm-6.00pm The Third University – volunteers involved in The Third University will be offering ‘free’ workshops to anyone interested in using social media apps or services as tools in their protest toolkit.
We’ll show you how you can set up a website using wordpress and turn it into a space to write, to share information or to host your campaign. We’ll go through the basis of using themes, hosting video and audio and writing your first blog post. You do not need to have much technical skills, but you do need to bring your own or share a laptop (this keeps the costs down (free!))
This session will take a look at the recent online activist campaigns, the reasons why they went viral and explore the use of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and ipadio are a tool for inspiring action and change. Get hands-on experience and advice on how to find, build and maintain a social media community around your cause. Bring your own laptop or mobile phone for additional opportunities to create campaigns, organise supporters and to amplify your message.
If you are making citizen media on the front line, you need to keep yourself safe. There is a chance that you’ll be more visible to the police or the rioters and with a camera/mobile to your face, there is more chance of being injured. This will be an open discussion to take about the best practice and the legal rights that you need to know if you wish to make media and document dissent.
Call for workshops:

I got involved in somewhere_to so that they could provide me with a space to carry out a ‘One Year To Go’ event for the Paralympic Games. I felt the need to mark ‘One Year To Go’ because the Paralympics doesn’t always receive the attention that it deserves. I have finished planning three workshops about the issues surrounding the Paralympic Games which is ready to be delivered to a range of ages and abilities in the build up to London 2012.
