Leicester-Shire and Rutland Sport and Leicestershire County Council are inviting Headteachers, PE Co-ordinators and the media to a local Primary School to see practical examples of how schools are using Physical Education to raise whole school standards and get young people more physically active and healthier.

The National PE target is for all children and young people to receive a minimum of two hours of high quality teaching and learning in this subject a week.  76% of Leicestershire children currently receive this entitlement, but the aim is to get that figure as close to 100% as possible.

To support schools in achieving this target and continuing to develop the quality of provision, an interactive afternoon is being planned at Congerstone Primary School on Wednesday 10th March 2010.  The open afternoon will be held between 1.30pm and 5pm show the methods that the school and its teachers are using to encourage pupils to be more active, healthier and ultimately to enjoy school and achieve their full potential.

Improving children’s standards of education, increasing their levels of fitness and reducing the chances of obesity through two hours of PE a week for every child and young person in the Leicestershire is essential and a priority for the Local Authority.

Mrs Watson, Head of Congerstone Primary School, said:  “Pupils, parents, governors and staff all give high priority to PE and sport in school and believe that a healthy, active lifestyle helps us to achieve our academic targets.  We are happy to share our practice with others and look forward to an exciting afternoon.”

This open afternoon will give Headteachers and PE leads across the County the chance to talk to each other about their approaches to physical education, learn new techniques and help improve the quality of what is already being provided.
