Kick boxing club appeals for girls

Young girls in Beaumont Leys are being offered free kickboxing lessons for the next eight weeks – but fewer than expected are taking part.

Martial Arts instructor, Michael Gannon, of MG Martial Arts, was surprised that the classes – held at Beaumont Leys Secondary School for girls aged 12-13 – were not more popular.

He said: “Offering free lessons is no trick- it is not a marketing ploy, it has the city council logo all over it so I don’t see why people wouldn’t want to come along.

“They may not be great at football, hockey or netball in their schools but martial arts can provide them with a great way to stay active.

“Mums and dads recognise that it can improve discipline and self confidence- whether it’s better behaviour at school or by being more outgoing with other activities.”

However the all-girls kickboxing class started with less than half the required number.

Mr Gannon said: “We have got 9 members but we really need 18 or 20 to keep it going.

“The ones who came said they really enjoyed it and would try and bring friends next week.”

Steven Hayward, father of a youngster who has lessons at the MG Martial Arts Centre, said: “My little girl started lessons 12 months ago and her concentration has improved loads.

“Her mum and I are really impressed with her progress.”

A separate karate class for girls and boys under the age of 11 started on the same day and was a success.

Most of the children at the first session on February 3 were from the Buswells Lodge primary school and it is expected to have a full turnout next week.

Both schemes are completely free and will be running for eight weeks but children are not required to attend every lesson.

The free karate for under 11s will take place every Wednesday at 5pm for the next eight weeks at the sports hall in Beaumont Leys Secondary School and the all-girls kickboxing lessons will follow at 7.30pm at the same place.

For more information about either class, contact MG Martial Arts on 07738249498.
