BROWNIES from Braunstone have been given a cash boost from the Town Council allowing them to reduce the cost of a five-day camping trip and subscription fees charged to members.
The group was awarded £200 through Braunstone Town Council which has already given 22 community grants to organisations in the Braunstone area.
The cash injection will help the girls to go on the excursion to celebrate 100 years of Girl Guides.
The girls will learn skills such as archery, map reading, erecting a tent and cooking food on an open fire.
Leader of the 3rd Braunstone Brownie group, Judith McNulty-Green, also known as ‘Wise Owl’, said: “It promotes confidence building, it allows the girls to choose the activities and to give them experiences that can change their outlook in a positive way.”
The former Brownie added: “It is a place where young girls feel safe, learn new skills, build confidence and have fun.”
The girls, aged 7-10, meet up every Tuesday at Friar Lane and Braunstone Baptist Church at 6.15pm.
The Brownies are also heavily involved in charity work within the community.
They recently had a fundraising event selling second hand books in order to raise money for a church in India.
Wise Owl said: “There is currently a waiting list to join. We are in desperate need of more volunteers to get involved to help offer more places to young people.”
Anyone wishing to know more about the group should contact the Girl Guides headquarters on 01162545290.
