Online Councillor of the Year

Online Councillor of the Year thumbnail

Editor: Congratulations to Cllr Ross Grant of Leicester City Council on winning this award. It doesn’t matter what your politics are, you have to be impressed that he has embraced social media as a way to engage people in the democratic process. Many people say that the upcoming election will be the UK’s first to encompass these new ways of communicating with the voters. Whether you vote Tory or not, at least you can see what the guy is up to. Maybe Twitter will increase transparency….who knows?

Story extract below from the Leicester Mercury:

A Leicester politician has been named online councillor of the year at a local democracy think tank’s inaugural awards.
Ross Grant is leader of the Conservatives on Leicester City Council and won the award for embracing blogging and social networking site Twitter.
He said: “It’s totally free and it helps you engage with the people you’re elected to serve, which is why I use social media whenever I can in my role as a councillor.
