Over 100 young people from across the County and City took part in the inter School Sport Partnership (SSP) Badminton Finals last week as part of the National Competition Manager programme, in partnership with Badminton England.

The climax of months of competition saw 45 school teams and over 250 pupils take part in their own SSP rounds at Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11. All seven winning teams took to the court at Babington College in a bid to be crowned the inter SSP Badminton Champion 2010.

Seven SSP’s took part in the final as 23 schools from the Burleigh, Hinckley & Bosworth, North West Leicestershire, Blaby & Harborough, Oadby & Wigston, Lancaster and Crownhills areas were all represented at the event.

The Key Stage 3 Girls’ competition was divided into two groups with the winner of each meeting in the final as De Lisle (Burleigh School Sport Partnership) beat Ivanhoe (North West Leicestershire School Sport Partnership).

In the Key Stage 3 Boys’ event, schools again played in two groups with the winners and runners up of each separate group meeting to decide who would progress to the final, where Hastings (Hinckley & Bosworth School Sport Partnership) overcame Humphrey Perkins (Burleigh School Sport Partnership).

The KS4 Girls’ event saw all schools competing in the same group with the team that finished top of the table crowned as champions. Beauchamp (Oadby & Wigston School Sport Partnership) claimed top spot after winning all of their matches. Crownhills (Crownhills School Sport Partnership) were runners up.

Beauchamp (Oadby & Wigston School Sport Partnership) also won the KS4 Boys’ competition and finished the day unbeaten. All schools again played in the same group and Bosworth (Hinckley & Bosworth School Sport Partnership) claimed the runners up spot. (See below for a full list of the final tables)

Andy Reed MP, Chair of Leicester-Shire and Rutland Sport said: “It is great to see that so many of our young people have taken part throughout the County and City. For those who reached the finals it is an enormous achievement. I hope they not only enjoyed the competition but continue to play and stay active.”
