Choosing your care couldn’t be easier

PEOPLE in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland are set to benefit from a booklet aimed at getting patients treated as quickly as possible.

The booklet, which is to be distributed in GP surgeries and health centres throughout November, will provide patients with the information they need to choose the best care for them when referred by their GP for specialist treatment.

It is an informative guide full of frequently asked questions and information on NHS treatment. Patients can use the booklet as a handy log to keep their important contact numbers and appointments all in one place.

Jane French, associate director of the 18 weeks strategy for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, said: “When your GP recommends you see a specialist for treatment you have a choice of where you can be seen. As well as large hospitals in Leicester, you can choose a small hospital close to where you live or you may be able to have treatment in a GP practice or health centre.

“The booklet is designed to take patients through the process of being referred by a GP for treatment. The NHS will try and make sure that treatment is as quick and convenient as possible, usually within 18 weeks. There are also some things you can do to help the process work. Make every effort to accept appointments offered to you, and make sure you follow any advice to get you ready for your treatment, such as losing weight or stopping smoking.”

Dr Chris Trzcinski, GP and chair of NHS Leicestershire County and Rutland’s professional executive committee said: “It’s important that patients who need to undergo treatment choose the right place for them. This booklet will help them make the right choice.”
