What Great Guys!

Snibston Discovery Museum would like to thank 1st Thringstone Scout Group, Cubs and Beavers for the donation of their 2009 guy.

The effigy, handmade by the youngsters in their weekly meets, was handed over earlier this month ahead of the annual fireworks display.

David Granger, Akela (Leader) of 1st Thringstone Scout Group, said: “We are delighted Snibston used our guy on their bonfire – the cubs and beavers worked very hard to produce it. It was an opportunity for them to work together to express their creativity and learn about the story behind November 5th. Seeing the guy on the fire made them very proud and many people commented on it.”

The event on 6th November was Snibston’s 16th fireworks spectacular and this year over 7,300 people turned up to enjoy the great atmosphere and sensational display – an increase of 6% on last year. Live music from local group, The Mokats, wowed the crowd and new radio station Hermitage FM compared the show.

Karen Brown from Coalville was selected as the lucky winner of Snibston’s ‘turn on the lights competition’ and kick-started a colourful display of rockets, fountains and dramatic music.

Ernie White, Leicestershire County Council Cabinet Member for Museums, said: “It’s great to see so many people attending the Snibston Fireworks event. It’s a real family evening and Snibston is the perfect place to bring the community together for this autumn ritual. I am pleased that the local cubs wanted to be involved and thank them for supplying the Guy Fawkes”.

Following the event, Ashby 4th Scout group kindly volunteered to clean the site and collect any remaining litter.
