GRANTEE PROFILES
“I worked as a lecturer and research assistant in Microbiology in one of the colleges in Zimbabwe, before I had to leave with my family because of death threats. One of the challenges I faced after arriving in the United Kingdom was that my diploma in Adult Education was not fully recognized and I decided to re-qualify to teach at secondary school level. CARA gave me a grant to do a part-time PGCE which I combine with part-time teaching. The grant covered my tuition fees, travel, IT equipment, books and childcare. CARA’s help has changed my life.”

“I graduated with a PhD in Venereology and worked as a Researcher at one of Moscow’s Scientific Research Institutes. I also worked with Medicines sans Frontières providing medical
help for displaced people. I finally had to leave my home country after being targeted by Russian troops. After I arrived in the UK, CARA helped me to re-qualify as a doctor in the UK, through a grant to cover my IELTS and PLAB exams and the costs associated with a three-month clinical attachment. I am now working as a doctor in a UK hospital

CARA GRANTS

Grants aim to enable refugee academics achieve employment in the UK at a level commensurate with their skills and experience in the long term. Grants can support refugee academics to re-qualify in a range of professions in the UK such as teaching, academia, engineering, law, the charity sector and medicine. We can fund qualifications or structured work placements that are clearly linked to employment. Types of funding include tuition fees, travel, registration fees, exam fees, bench fees, books, IT equipment and childcare.

To apply for a grant, please contact CARA by telephone on 020 7021 0880 or email info.cara@lsbu.ac.uk
We are happy to discuss whether you are eligible for a CARA grant and to help you prepare your application.

Deadline for applications: 5.00pm, Friday 11th December 2009
The Allocation Committee will meet in February 2010 to review applications and award grants. Applicants will be notified of the Allocation Committee’s decision by 1st March 2010.

ABOUT CARA
CARA was established in 1933 in response to the persecution of academics in Europe. Today most of CARA’s UK work focuses on helping refugee academics overcome the barriers they face in entering the employment market in the UK.
