Students from the University of Leicester aim to raise funds for local charities with a week of events dedicated to good causes. This year, RAG week is taking place Monday 9 November – Friday 13 November encouraging people to have fun whilst raising money for charity.

Last year, RAG week raised £5,000 and the association is hoping to surpass this total this year. The money raised will benefit local charities such as LOROS, Leicestershire Air Ambulance as well as the Percy Gee Appeal which is raising money for the new Students’ Union.

There is something for everyone to get involved in during the week; the events taking place are as follows: The highly anticipated Battle of the Dances returns once again on Monday 9 November with dance groups from the University of Leicester and the University of Warwick competing against each other in an X-Factor inspired dance show to be crowned champions of dance.

Doors open at 7pm and tickets cost £3/£4 advance for members/non-members and £5 on the door, with all profits going to BBC Children in Need. Last year’s winners, Logik, a community dance group, will be making a guest appearance during the show.

Queens Hall will be hosting an Arts and Craft Fair on Tuesday 10 November from 10am – 4pm with face painting, cake stalls and much more.

A Campus Collection will be taking place on Wednesday 11 November between 9am – 1pm. Those interested in taking part can pick-up a bucket from the RAG office on Wednesday morning and can celebrate their success at the Union for a special-themed RAG Leicester, Wednesday evening, with £1 vodka jellies on sale courtesy of RAG.

Thursday 12 November sees Queens Hall hosting a Beauty Fair offering great deals for hair and beauty treats. And the week reaches its climax on Friday 13 November with the infamous RAG Bar Crawl beginning in The Scholar bar at 7pm. T-shirts cost £5 which includes entry to Mad Fer It.

Looking forward to the forthcoming week, RAG President, Matt Evans, commented: “My hopes for the week are that everyone has an awesome time, trying something new or doing their bit for charity. The highlight of the week for me will be the Battle of the Dances on the Monday and also the RAG Bar Crawl on the Friday, which have always been the most popular events of the week.”

There will also be the annual Sabb Challenge which will pit your Sabbatical officers against one another to see who can raise the most money whilst completing tricky challenges, which in the past have included locking the Sabbs in a cage and throwing wet sponges at them.

If you want to get involved with RAG week, please contact RAG secretary, Leonnie via ldm10@le.ac.uk who will be co-ordinating volunteers for the events.
