VICAR OF BAGHDAD TO SPEAK AT UNIVERSITY OF LEICESTER
Canon Andrew White, parish priest to more than 3,000 Iraqi people at St Georges Church in Iraq and President of the Foundation for Relief and Reconciliation in the Middle East, is to give the 2009 Provost Derek Hole Annual Public Lecture at the University of Leicester.
His talk, entitled: The inter-religious search for peace in Iraq will take place on Thursday 29th October at 5.30pm in the Rattray Lecture Theatre on the Universitys main campus. It is open to the public and free of charge.
Canon Andrew White, often known as the Vicar of Baghdad, has worked in Iraq since 2005. He has been involved in several high-profile mediation operations.
He has written extensively on conflict resolution and the Middle East, including two books – Iraq: People of Hope, Land of Despair (2003) and Iraq: Searching for Hope (2005), which won a Christian Book Award.
This is the third lecture sponsored by the Very Reverend Derek Hole, Honorary Graduate of the University. When endowing it, Dr Hole suggested: The lecture should be given annually by a person of national standing, lay or ordained, who would give a Christian perspective on an important issue of the day.
The majority of our young people have little to do with the worshipping life of the Church and, conscious of this, I wanted to provide an opportunity for a Christian voice to be heard at this University where the important issues of the day would be discussed.
