A platform for the voices of 7-13 year olds across Leicester City Council
Leicester Children’s Council is a platform that children and young people from projects across the city use to gather the ideas, opinions and thoughts of young people within local communities. They are currently working on becoming reporters for the second year running and covering National Playday, with this year’s theme ‘Make time’ in the Town Hall Square on Wednesday August 5th.
The children’s Council are interviewing and recruiting four paid members of staff who will be young people aged between 14-18 support, develop and share skills with them. Later this year they are going to be conducting a citywide consultation with children and young people to find out what participation means to them. They will also be working with children and young people from the Young People’s Council, The2 children’s and young people’s news agency and Wot Box projects.
The young people are also working to have a say in the way the new Haymarket Youth Hub project is being developed. They have taken part in the sharing of plans and designs for the building and have visited the site.
Will, from the Children’s Council, said: “it is really good that we are having a say and are able to ask questions. It will have lots to offer young people.”
The young people are working hard and we will no doubt be hearing more about them in future editions of Soar Community.
The Children’s Council is managed and supported by Tina Barton and Alan Curtis, on behalf of Action of children as part of The Preventative Network for Leicester.
