Youth work, citizenship and supervision of young people are among the topics that can be studied on a new series of short courses at De Montfort University (DMU).
DMU’s Youth Affairs Unit has set up the programme of one and two-day courses primarily for those working in the sector, though they are open to anyone with an interest in issues affecting children and young people.
The courses run between March and June 2009 and cost from £160 to £275 inclusive of VAT.
Jason Wood, Course Leader at DMU’s Youth Affairs Unit, said: “Practitioners are often working with very challenging young people or with difficult social issues and can feel isolated in their work.
“The aim of these courses is to help those working with children and young people access the latest knowledge and keep up to date with current legislation and topical issues. An added benefit is that they bring people together to share ideas, concerns and ways to take forward best practice.”
The courses on offer are:
- 18 and 19 March: Global Youth Work
- 31 March and 30 April: An Introduction to the Skills of Coaching Staff
- 01 April: Young People, Active Citizenship and Youth Work
- 20 April and 15 May: Emotional Literacy in Work with Children and Young People
- 28 and 29 April: Outcomes-Led Evaluation
- 14 May and 11 June: Informal Education in Schools and Colleges
- 18 and 19 May: Supervision in Children and Young People’s Services
Courses in ‘Effective Learning and Development with Young People’ and ‘Designing and Delivering Learning Opportunities’ are also planned.
All teaching takes place at DMU’s Leicester city campus.
