Former Leicester City legend, Steve Walsh, has this week thrown his support behind one of Leicestershire’s favourite institutions.

Leicester Market, recently crowned as ‘Britain’s favourite market’ in a public poll conducted by the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA), have announced a partnership with Walsh and his soccer school, which the footballer is set to launch with fellow ex-footballer, Muzzy Izzet.

Walsh said: “Leicester Market is the heartbeat of our county and I’m delighted it has been recognised for such a prestigious national award.”

He added: “It is essential that we all support our local services, such as the market, especially given the current economic climate. I am passionate about Leicester and I’m proud to call it my adopted home.”

Voting took place over December and January, with the award presented by BBC MasterChef winner Thomasina Miers at a ceremony on Thursday 29th January.

NABMA Chief Executive, Graham Wilson, congratulated Leicester: “Such a public accolade is a real endorsement of the importance that the City and its visitors place on its markets. This new category in Market of the Year has created lots of interest and NABMA thanks all those that took the time and trouble to record their votes.”

Leicester Market are the first recipients of this award and Head of Markets and Enterprise, Nick Rhodes, was particularly pleased with the achievement:
“To be voted for an award such as this is a real honour, but it is made all the greater when the public are the ones giving the endorsement.”

“I’d like to thank the traders, customers, those that voted and everyone else who helps to make Leicester Market the ongoing success story that it is.”
