Jackie Duffy Project Manager at the Leicester & Leicestershire Irish Forum contacted Citizens Eye. She explained that the LLIF is a grass roots community project supporting all Irish identified people in the city and county.
“We provide a variety of advice and advocacy to anyone for any reason but our specific remit is to support isolated and disadvantaged Irish senior citizens and Irish Travellers. With senior citizens we provide a befriending service, ensuring that we have regular contact with people that would normally spend the majority of their time alone. We support their individual needs with other agencies such as Social Services, Age Concern, the NHS and housing.
We also help them apply for Irish pensions etc. With Irish Travellers we approach the needs of the individual with the understanding that their needs are very different to any other community in Leicester. Our main focus is the support of young Travellers based on the fact that they rarely access any of the cities main stream youth projects due to the fear of discrimination.
LLIF also support young Irish new arrivals that come to the city to access the Universities. We act as a sign posting agency to ensure that the move to a new city is as easy as possible.
We also provide a variety of social events that enables the community to come together to enjoy their shared cultural identity.”
