Second Citie

Tom Henchman - My undecided love hate relationship with the countries 10th biggest city began almost five years ago when I left the bright lights of London to study at DMU.

Making the daunting trip up the M1, me too full of nerves to express the sadness my mother was clearly too nervous to hold back. Three years of generic studentdom flowed into a 9 - 5 within the city’s newly dubbed cultural quarter, and as my student life slowly expired as friends moved on and relationships ended, somehow I remained.

My fondness for Leicester, as hard as I’ve tried over the years, is undeniable, the longer I’ve spent cycling its grey streets and muddy fields, the more I have discovered its hidden gems and subtle qualities.

It will never be able to compete with the gaudy glamour and sprawling gluttony of London, but it has taken me in and made me feel at home when I’ve felt so far from it, which is why I am proud to call it my second city.
